▣ Origin of Dolharubang
Dolharubang is well known to represent the Jeju Island, and widely favored by many people from different nations. It is a precious folk material.
The word, Dolharubang, is a relatively recent invention. It has several original names such as “Wooseokmok,” “Mooseokmok,” and “Beoksumeori.” Dolharubang means “Dol (stone) Halabeoji (grand father).” After serious deliberation in 1971, the Jeju Cultural Property Committee decided to use Dolharubang. Since then, it has been called only in that name. In old days, Dolharubang was normally placed just in front of the castle gate representing various things such the symbol of protector, shamanistic power of the dark art, and boundary mark. In a word, the function of Dolharubang seems to be like a totem pole on land. The time of its origin is now known. |
